Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of engineering equipment, metals and materials to perform mechanical engineering fabrication and welding tasks when installing, servicing, repairing and maintaining milk harvesting and/or water and effluent systems.
- Apply knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic principles and components, and the relative merits of each, when working with plant and equipment associated with milk harvesting and/or water and effluent systems.
- Apply knowledge of relevant legislation, New Zealand industry standards, and requirements of the Electrical Workers Registration Board, supported by knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements, when carrying out all aspects of dairy engineering work.
Graduates of the Pumping Systems strand will also be able to:
- Assess water sources and calculate water requirements for stock water, dairy shed consumption and irrigation.
- Apply knowledge of pipe hydraulics, the design, operation and maintenance of rural water and dairy effluent systems, including complex branched systems, to the selection, layout design and installation of pipes.
- Install a farm water reticulation or effluent system, test it to current accepted industry standards, commission it and complete the handover to the customer.
- Assemble and disassemble pumping, water reticulation and dairy effluent systems as part of fault finding, repair, service and maintenance work.
- Apply knowledge of the causes and risks of backflow when installing an effective backflow prevention device.
- Evaluate the requirements for the treatment of various natural water sources and determine appropriate treatment options to meet both health and legislative requirements.
- Identify hazards and safety requirements when dealing with both water reticulation and dairy effluent systems, particularly around sumps and ponds.
