What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a paid job where you learn while you work. You’ll get hands-on experience, gain a nationally recognised qualification, and earn money — no student debt needed.

Whether you’re just starting out or upskilling in your current job, apprenticeships are open to anyone 16 or older, living legally in New Zealand with a valid work visa, residency, or citizenship. Most take around3–4 years to complete.

Apprenticeships can lead to exciting opportunities — like working overseas or running your own business.

How it works

  • Get a job in your chosen trade (we can help!)
  • Sign up with Competenz — we’ll guide you and your employer through the process
  • Competenz will assign you a Training Advisor or Account Manager.
  • Your Training Advisor or Account Manager will get you signed up as an apprentice and plan your career path.
  • Start your training on-the-job.
  • Study to pass your unit standards.
  • Finish qualified and ready for your next step.
