Islington local Brad Smith has been named BJ Ball Apprentice of the Year at the prestigious 2025 Pride In Print Awards, held at Auckland’s Cordis Hotel on Friday, in front of more than 500 industry peers.

The Transcontinental Packaging NZ print supervisor and flexographic printer was presented with the top award after being recognised as a standout among six national finalists.

Brad, who lives with his wife and two children, delivered a heartfelt speech on the night, acknowledging his family, training mentors and employers.

“This is incredible recognition – it’s an unreal feeling,” said Brad. “I’m proud to be part of such a passionate, skilled and resilient community. The future of print is in great hands.”

Speaking after the event, he added, “It’s an incredible honour – I’m still a bit blown away by it all! Being recognised like this is hugely rewarding and has really motivated me to keep pushing forward in my career.”

The award recognises outstanding technical achievement, work ethic and commitment to learning. Brad recently completed his New Zealand Certificate in Print (Reel-Fed Printing) Level 4 and is already eyeing the next challenge – a Diploma in Print Industry Management.

“Seeing my skills and confidence grow has been hugely rewarding. It’s a great feeling to apply what I’ve learned and see it make a real impact in my work,” says Brad.

Steven Jack, Brad’s training advisor from industry training organisation Competenz, praised his dedication and drive.

“Brad’s journey has been nothing short of epic. He balanced shift work, family life, and study with determination and heart – never missing a deadline, and often finishing tasks ahead of time,” said Steven.

“His passion for the print industry is infectious. He dedicated time outside of work to ask questions, observe, and absorb as much as he could. It’s been a privilege to support him.”

Competenz supports apprentices across the country with training and mentoring, helping thousands of Kiwis like Brad grow their skills and advance their careers in the trades.

Transcontinental Packaging NZ print manager Nick Ball said the award was well deserved.

“Brad is reliable, committed and always keen to learn. He’s already a supervisor and now mentoring another apprentice – a true leader in the making. We couldn’t be prouder.”

Brad’s win capped off an inspiring night celebrating New Zealand’s best in print. The 2025 Pride In Print Awards also honoured sustainability champions, top trainers and standout businesses across the sector.

The prestigious PrintNZ Awards for Trainer of the Year were presented to Aaron Smith (Opal Kiwi Packaging Auckland), and Training Company of the Year to Blue Star Wellington.
